In 2021, Northern Arizona Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance (NAZADA) played a pivotal role in designating Flagstaff as a Dementia Friendly City. This initiative was driven by a commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive community for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. NAZADA collaborated with local government, businesses, healthcare providers, and community members to raise awareness and implement supportive measures throughout the city.

NAZADA organized a series of educational workshops, training sessions, and community forums to engage and inform residents about dementia-related issues. They partnered with businesses to provide dementia-friendly training to employees, enabling them to better assist customers who might be experiencing cognitive challenges. The organization also worked with healthcare providers to ensure that services were more accessible and responsive to the needs of people living with dementia.

One of the key steps in the designation process was the formation of the Dementia Friendly Flagstaff Action Team, a diverse group of stakeholders dedicated to assessing the city’s readiness and implementing strategic initiatives. This team conducted surveys and focus groups to identify areas where support was needed and developed a comprehensive plan to address those gaps.

Flagstaff’s commitment to becoming a Dementia Friendly City under NAZADA’s leadership has fostered a community where people living with dementia can participate more fully in daily life with dignity and respect. This designation not only reflects the city’s dedication to inclusivity but also serves as a model for other communities seeking to become more supportive and understanding of individuals with dementia.
